Writing Secret #1

I'm still shocked at some of the messages that I've been receiving from people who have read BlackMoon Beginnings. A few of my readers have been asking about how I write and if I have any tips for anyone else who is in a similar position. So, I though I'd make a weekly post about some of my writing secrets.These posts will be shorter, but I think they'll be interesting to some people--especially those who want to dip their toes into waters of writing.

1. I have to listen to music.

Music helps create a scene for me. I have a different playlist that I listen to when I write my books. Certain songs just put me in this place that allows me to connect with characters on a deeper level. It allows me to feel what they are feeling during that specific moment. It allows to understand what is going on in their mind. It allows me to follow their actions and then adequately create a reaction.

I can't write if I don't have music playing. Think of your favorite movie. Now think about how that movie would be if there wasn't any music in it. It wouldn't be the same.

I'm writing a difficult scene in this new contemporary book I'm working on. I can type without looking at the keyboard, so I put a song on, closed my eyes, and just wrote. I let myself feel the song. I let the emotions run through me and and move onto the page. I let the words speak for me. I don't need to see a scene to write it. I need to feel it. I need to how my characters are feeling at that specific time and musics helps me get into that zone.

This is the song that I was listening to when I wrote that scene. I was literally sitting in my room with my eyes closed, swaying to the music, and writing. Though I may have looked weird, I feel like the emotions in the scene will be conveyed to those who read it. I started crying, because I felt what my characters were going through.

Music is very powerful. None of my books would be where they are if I didn't listen to while writing.

Not everyone can listen to music while they write though. Try it out once and see how it goes. If you're one of those people who can't listen to music and do something else at the same time...well than this doesn't apply to you. Sorry!
