Embrace Your Weirdness

Monday, August 17, 2015
This isn't writing related, but I found this video today and it made me think about some things. (This does have some language, so don't watch it if that bothers you.)

I am weird. If any of you know me personally, you can probably agree to that. I asked my family to explain to me why I'm weird, and all they said was, "I don't know. You just are."

Here are some of the examples of my weirdness that we came up with:
  1. I talk to myself more than anyone else. I'm a little antisocial. Sometimes I'll look at the clock on my phone at night and realize that I haven't spoken a single word to another human being at all that day. I'm enough company for myself though.
  2. I think I'm the funniest person to have ever walked on this Earth. I'm not, but I make myself laugh all the time.
  3. Puns are the greatest grammar related gifts. I love them so much. If you use a pun around me, I just might fall in love with you. You've been warned.
  4. I fangirl so hard, I cry sometimes. Like literal tears will stream down my face if I start fangirling. It's not a pretty sight.
  5. I have the weirdest obsession with Josh Groban. I don't know why, but I wanna marry him. Darn Kat Dennings.
  6. I often stutter on "I--" when I get excited. I went to speech therapy for that when I was younger. It didn't help.
  7. I love playing Call of Duty, but I hate violence. I am also awful at Call of Duty, but that's not going to stop me.
  8. I have to fold pieces of paper into smaller shapes. Receipts, straw wrappers, coupons, etc. Anytime there is a piece of paper in front of me, I have a strong urge to fold it. Basically, don't let me have any important documents.
  9. I can't eat anything if I don't have a napkin.
  10. I eat chips and other finger foods with a fork or spoon because I don't like it when my hands get greasy (that's why I have to eat with a napkin.) Along these lines, I have trouble eating in public because I have a fear that everyone is watching me.
  11. I literally can't push a shopping cart. I don't know why, but I just can't push one. I always grab a basket even if I get so much food that it feels like my arms are about to fall off.
  12. I have to know current events. I love reading news articles. AND THE WEATHER. I love knowing the weather. I'm the girl you come to if you need to know the weather for the day...or week...or the Farmer's Almanac predictions for the upcoming months.
  13. I can't eat cereal with milk. I don't know. Milk is weird to me...like who decided to pull on a cow's udder and then drink what came out of it?!
  14. I love trees....like I love them. I feel so at peace when I'm surrounded by trees. I recently went to Maine and it took everything in me not to hug every single tree I passed. You can learn so much about the environment from just one tree. I know way too much information about trees. Don't get me started.
  15. I create these stupid little songs for almost everything I do. I get uncomfortable with silence. I need some sort of background noise or I will spaz out. Like I'll start singing, "I'm walking down the road. Look at me walking down the road. Oh, there's a man staring at me, so I should stop singing. I'm not crazy, I promise," while I'm walking down the road. I don't know why I do it.

Anyway, the point of all of that is that I am weird.

I spent much of my life caring about what others thought about me. I was afraid to express certain thoughts and emotions for fear of being judged. I wasn't happy. It took me 21 years to realize that I actually don't care what any of them think. Why should I? They don't know me and will probably never take the time to actually get to know me.

I can keep going on about how no matter what you do in life, there will always be someone to judge you, but I think everyone already knows that. My point for this blog post isn't to make you all think I'm weird, but to show you that it's okay to be a little weird. I love what I'm doing right now, and where I currently am because I stopped caring so much. Life may suck right now, but someday you'll see that everything you are going through made you who you are: and that is a complete weirdo. An awesome, freaking-fantastic weirdo. As mentioned in that video, that weirdness may get you somewhere in life. It'll make you stand you. It makes you unique. Someday, you'll see that you're surrounded by other weirdos who love you just the way you are. Embrace your inner weirdness and let it shine. Be who you are, not what anyone else thinks you should be. You'll be much happier in the long run.

Let's start a weird circle. What are some of your weird quirks? What makes you shine? Share with me :)

  1. I do so many of the same things! I am also very antisocial and would probably win the award for being the most antisocial person in the world. I barley talk to anyone outside of my family on most days and prefer spending the entire day reading or on the computer doing something. I have a weird habit of just needing to eat something every five minutes, like I'd finish my lunch and not even five minutes later, I am in the kitchen again looking for something to eat. And most of the time I make no sense whatsoever to my family when I am talking to them. I have a habit of going from talking about one thing to something totally different within the span of one minute. And somehow I am constantly tripping over everything when I walk, it's super embarrassing, especially when I am out in public. Lol. It's good to know that I am not the only weird person here.
