I started reading this book at 1:30 a.m. You may ask yourself, "Why, Kaitlyn, would you sit down and open a book at 1:30 in the morning and start reading? Shouldn't you have been sleeping?" My response would be the simple four letter acronym that seems to have taken over my generation: YOLO. Just Kidding. I hate YOLO. My actual response would be: I wasn't tired.
I am now. Let me tell you...I can't sleep when it's bright outside, so going to sleep at sunrise wasn't a smart idea.
Here is the synopsis from Goodreads:
Despite the
tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel
has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon
diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly
appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be
completely rewritten.
Non-Spoilerish Review
This book has to be the worst/best book I've ever read. I finished the book in a little under four hours and then I just sat in my bed wondering "What did I just read?" I knew the book was about two teenagers with cancer, but this book was so much more than I was expecting.
The last 100 pages had me crying. Not the steady tears streaming down your face crying. This was the I have to put the book down because I can't see through the downpour coming out of my eyes, and I have to close my bedroom door because I'm sobbing so loud and oh wait, I can't breathe either type of crying.
Don't let that description deter you from reading this amazing book. Though I mainly cried, there were a few moments where I did laugh. The dialogue between Augustus and Hazel is just...I don't even know. You'll have to read the book to understand what I'm to say here. I just wish people actually spoke like that.
Then, there is Augustus Waters. I love him.
This book tugged my heartstrings the whole way. I knew when I shed a tear about 100 pages in that I was a goner. I feel like John Green ripped out my heart, stomped on it a couple thousand times, and then shoved it back into my chest upside down, leaving me with an unsteady heartbeat and partial blindness from the tears streaming down my face. Yeah, it was that good.
Read this book. Love it. You won't regret it.
Here are some picture quotes form this book:
After you read the book, you will ask yourself: and this was written by the man that made this Youtube video?:
By the way, if you haven't watched any of his vlogs, you need it. They're great.
This book is set in Indianapolis, which is where I live. It was weird that he mentioned the mall that I shop at! My little Indiana town was the setting of a book. It shouldn't surprise me because John Green is from this area, but it's still cool to read about a familiar setting.
Please, read this book. You will not regret it. This book is so beautifully written that even now, I'm crying as I think about what happened in this book. I seriously questioning my life right now, but that tells me that it's a good book. If it leaves this sort of lasting impact on me, it needs to be read by everyone.
