A Post Not Book Related? What?

Wednesday, February 27, 2013
This post is not about my books or any other books for that matter. I decided to change it up a little bit. As I would hope you would all have guessed by now, I love to read and write. However, I still love science and am majoring in Wildlife Biology. I still want to work in a rehabilitation center. I still have all of these "tree-huggery" plans. No, that's not a real word, but I agree. It should be.

But some of may not know, I have a big appreciation for art. I've always been kind of artistic, but I didn't really look at artwork and admire it. It started when I took AP Art History my junior year in my high school. I don't know what it was about that class, but I loved it.

Michelangelo, Botticelli, Edgar Degas, Jacques Louis David, Jean Fragonard, JMW Turner, Renior, Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O' Keeffe etc. For the most part, I loved it all. I had some trouble understand surrealism though...

I loved learning about the history behind the artwork and the time and dedication it took those artists to create those pieces. I mean, look at the Sistine Chapel. Do you realize how much physical pain Michelangelo put himself through to complete that masterpiece? I've seen the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in person and it's something you don't forget.

I was looking through Yahoo News stories and came across this Youtube video and...I don't even know what to think. Some people may find this video boring, but I think it's beautiful. Brian Maffitt projected the movie "The Lorax" out of his window during the recent snowstorm and this was the result. Just watch it, you'll see.

I saw this video and thought that I had to share it with someone, so I decided to post it on my blog. The colors, the music, the falling snow...everything just comes together so beautifully. I hope you all liked it as much as I did. I can't wait to see what Brian Maffitt will do next!

Some of my favorite pieces of art:

That's all I have for today. Until next time!

Just Finished Reading. . .

Saturday, February 23, 2013
I woke up on Saturday and despite the fact that I have a big Biology test on Monday, I decided to read two books. Nonstop. I know. Someone needs to control me. This college girl has gone crazy. The only time I got up today was to turn the light on because my hardback book doesn't light up like my Kindle screen. I'm a crazy, lazy college student. Who would have thunk it?

Anyways, the books I read were Miss Me Not by Tiffany King and The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin. Those are not books you should read back to back. I currently have no idea what is going on in my mind right now, so I apologize if these little reviews make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Miss Me Not by Tiffany King

Miss Me Not I've read a lot of other Tiffany King books, so I know how she writes. Since I've liked all of her books, I didn't expect this one to be any different. However, this book is not like her other books. I was shocked. In a good way. The subject matter is...darker than most books I've read.

Suicide.

This book is all about suicide and how if affects the individual contemplating it and those around them. I can't even begin to describe how much I enjoyed this book...which sounds bad, but the book was really good.

The book starts off with Madison and her friend James talking about their suicide pact. The two didn't have easy lives. Madison has a distant jerk of a mother. She doesn't even let Madison call her mom. She makes her call her "Donna." Her father isn't in the picture, so it's basically just Madison and her dark past. She doesn't like to be touched, she lives in the shadows, and James is her only "friend." Her suicide buddy. They understand each other, but don't have a normal relationship.

Then Dean came into the picture. Dean Jackson. I loved him. Dean was recruited to help tutor Madison. Day by day, he started to break down the wall Madison built around herself. She began to trust someone for the first time. Since she was growing closer to Dean, her relationship with James started dissipate.

I don't want to give anything away, because I think that everyone should read this book. It is pretty a heavy subject matter, but Tiffany King broke up the heaviness with the quick banter between Dean and Madison. I love their conversations. There is a strong message behind this book and I know that you won't regret reading this book. No matter how dark a tunnel is, there's always a light at the end. It evoked so many emotions in me. I laughed and cried while reading this book. When an author is about to evoke those emotions, it is a very good book. In my opinion, I think this is Tiffany King's best book so far.

"I couldn't help thinking about my petal plucking daisy I had gotten at Mitch's funeral. My world was suddenly filled with people who were the petals of the daisy that would miss me."

The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

The Evolution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #2) I seriously can't wrap my mind around what just happened while I was reading this. I want to apologize to my roommate for being such an annoying reader. I just...I can't...I previously wrote a review for the first book in this trilogy. I loved book one, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, and book two was no different. I loved it. But I hated it at the same time.

Let me just start off by saying this: I LOVE THE COVER. I have serious cover love for this book. When I first got my copy, I just held the book in my hand and stared. It's so pretty.

I love Michelle Hodkin's writing style. It's beautiful and haunting at the same time. To put it lightly, this book is creepy. It's dark and mysterious and just creepy. It had me sitting of the edge of my seat (not literally since I never left my bed) and trying to predict what was going to happen next. I was wrong every single time. I don't like being wrong.

I love Noah and Mara's relationship in this book. And Jamie! I love his humor. He had me actually laughing out loud at some moments. Those light moment were a great reprieve for what came next. Michelle Hodkin is one of those authors that writes in a happy scene and then does a complete one eighty. I can imagine her sitting behind her computer thinking "Aww, that was cute. Now how I can I make their life miserable again?" I doubt she does that, but still. I can imagine it.

We don't get any more answers in this book than we do in book one, which frustrated me. I just want to know what the heck is going on. This book left me even more confused than the first one.

The ending....If you hate cliff hangers, don't read this series. I, personally, have a love-hate relationship with them. All of my books end or will end with a cliff hanger, so I love writing them. However, I hate when other authors do that. (It doesn't make sense, I realize that.) They are effective, but at the time they just make me want to throw the book at someone.

The third book in this trilogy, The Retribution of Mara Dyer, cannot come soon enough. I need to know what happened and how everything ends. Right now. However, I'll be patient and wait til October. Okay, I might not be too patient, but I can wait.

CONCLUSION: I would recommend both of these books to anyone who loves reading. If you like a book that evokes an emotion out of you, both of these would be a great choice. Miss Me Not was a more emotional read. It had me laughing and crying. The Evolution of Mara Dyer had me reeling and wanting more. I still can't wrap my mind around what happened. That's a good thing. Both had their lasting impacts on me and I know that I'll be thinking about them for a while.

Just Keep Swimming :)

Thursday, February 21, 2013
When I started this whole writing process, I didn't know what would become of it. In fact, I didn't think anything would come out of it. I thought I would start writing and realize that it wasn't for me. I thought I would start book one and stop half way through. I thought writing would be too difficult and I would quit.

You see growing up, I was that kid that played lots of sports. I know that those of you who know me now are probably laughing. Because now, I'm the most uncoordinated and clumsy person you've probably ever met. I trip going up and down stairs. I step on my own feet. I experience random gravitational surges. Yes, gravity is still working in case you were wondering. But when I was younger, I was in softball, tennis, and gymnastics and quit all of those things just when I was getting good. I don't know why I quit, but for some reason I always did. My coaches and parents tried to talk me out of it, but I quit anyways. Looking back now, I wish I would have listened to them. I wished that I didn't give up, but I know that I can't change anything.
Story of my life. Also, I have recently become obsessed with looking at pictures of adorable penguins. I have a problem. I know, but they are just too cute! :)

Now back on track, I'm so glad that I didn't stop writing. I'm glad that I pushed through all those days of writers block. I'm glad that I didn't stop when I was going through my I suck at writing phases. I still don't consider myself an author and I probably won't ever. I'm just a writer. I never realized that I would love writing as much as I do. To me, it's very cathartic. I can express my feelings and emotions through my writing. I read somewhere that "Writing is for shy people who want to tell a story, but avoid eye contact." I don't know about other writers, but I find this to be very true for myself. I'm shy. I'll admit that. I'm slowly pushing out of my shell, but it's a long process. I have all these ideas in my head, but I can't express them aloud. So I write. I write my thoughts down, hoping that they make sense and that people can relate to them.

Since I've started writing, I've had a couple of people ask me for writing advice. Me! I'm touched, but I'm not the person you should ask. I can tell you the cliched don't give up and just keep writing, but that's about all I can do. Everyone is different. If you want to write, write. If you want to act, act. If you want to join the circus, join the freaking circus. Don't let anyone tell you what to do. You are your own person and you make your own decisions. That's the advice I can give you. Just try it. You never know where it will take you. If you don't succeed, try again. If you don't succeed then, then maybe it's not for you. Maybe you are meant to do something else, but at least you can say you tried. That's all that matters.

My book has only been out for five days now, but I'm already loving this experience. My book has almost been downloaded 600 times. I have eight five-star reviews, been added to seven "favorite author" lists on Smashwords, and my blog has been viewed a couple hundred times. My book got accepted into the Premium Catalog on Smashwords, which means that they'll send it out to other major retailers such as Barnes and Noble, iBooks, Sony, Amazon, Kobo, etc. I can't believe what is going on, but I'm so glad that I decided to do this. I'm glad that people are enjoying my book and are anxiously waiting for the next one. I can't wait for you all to read that one. I hope everything will continue to go well and that I learn a lot from this process. Who knows where this road will take me, but I'm in it for the journey, not the final destination.
If I could hug you all, I would. Since I can't, this will have to do! :)
That's all I have for today. Until next time!

I seriously love you all

First off, I can't even begin to tell you all how much it means to me that you're all supporting me so much. In just the first twenty four hours, my book has been downloaded over 220 times, been given two five-star reviews (by non-family members!) and I've been added to two favorite author lists on Smashwords. This is before my book has even been uploaded to the major retailers! This may not seem like a big deal to anyone, but I honestly wasn't expecting this sort of reception. I had a dream the night before that I was going to get all one-star reviews and everyone would shun me. I know, that's a little drastic, but still. It could happen. I can't even begin to express what I'm feeling right now. I cried happy tears last night.

Secondly, I know that BlackMoon Beginnings is currently listed on Amazon for $0.99. Amazon does do price-matching on some items, so I've reported the price to them. When Smashwords finishes reviewing my book, they'll format it for all the other retail sites and it should be on Amazon and Barnes and Noble before March (I'm hoping!) for free. So, please keep downloading from Smashwords at the moment.

Also, if you have read my book, are currently reading it, or plan to read it soon, please review it when you are done. Reviews help out writers so much. If you loved the book, please review it. If you thought it was just "eh," please review it. If you hated it, review it. Please. Every little thing helps.  I'm aware of the little grammatical errors. I'm trying to fix those and I'll probably update a newer version during my spring break, which is the first week of March.

Thank you all so much. It really does mean a lot.
